A postwoman saves the life of an elder

Kayla Berridge is a mail carrier in a small town in New Hampshire, USA.

She was doing her usual 14km round in Newmarket on Thursday when she noticed a resident hadn’t picked up her mail for a few days, but her car was in the driveway.

“When people pick up their mail every day, you start noticing their habits,” she explains.

Kayla therefore notified her boss, who asked the local police to carry out a well-being check on the person.

Officers responding to the call found the elderly woman on the floor pinned down by objects that had fallen on her.

According to the police, she remained in this position for at least three days.

The Newmarket Police Lieutenant made a point of congratulating Kayla. “She realized it was an elderly person. Usually she communicates with her often during the week, if not daily, and realized there was something wrong. She did the right thing by contacting us,” he says.

Kayla doesn’t want to be called a hero, she’s just glad things turned out that way.

“It’s crazy just by paying attention to detail how much you can save someone’s life,” she said.

The elderly lady was admitted to hospital for hypothermia and dehydration, but she will recover, say doctors.

“We really believe that because of Kayla’s actions…. She probably saved a life here,” said the police chief.
