“Technically, it went well,” but this hearing is “worrying on several points”, says Mathilde Panot, president of the La France insoumise (LFI) group at the National Assembly on franceinfo Thursday May 2. She was questioned with Rima Hassan on Tuesday by the police as part of investigations for “apology of terrorism”, after comments linked to the war in the Middle East.
Mathilde Panot sees this “a political attack”, after being heard “seven months” after a press release published by his parliamentary group on October 7, the day of Hamas’ unprecedented attack against Israel. This text sparked controversy since it paralleled the“armed offensive by Palestinian forces” and the“intensification of the Israeli occupation policy” in the Palestinian territories. The rebellious elected official explained that she learned during her hearing that the complaint which led to her custody had been filed on October 11.
“If I really was advocating terrorism, do you really believe that they would have waited seven months to summon me, it’s not serious.”

“I dare to hope in my country that if someone truly advocated terrorism, it would not take seven months to summon him,” she lashed out. Mathilde Panot also regretted that the investigators “didn’t bother to target” THE “words or sentences” which he is accused of in the press release published by his parliamentary group on October 7. “It’s ridiculous and they didn’t even bother to target some of the things”she snapped.
Panot denounces an “instrumentalization of justice”
The opportunity for her to link this summons to the European election campaign, accusing “the power” of “to make a political maneuver”. “Of course there is a maneuver, an instrumentalization of the police and justice with a view to an electoral result”she insisted. “I deplore it because it is very serious, the drift that they are taking in the Land of Enlightenment”she added, considering that Emmanuel “Macron reinvented the thought police”. “We must protect the political life of this country from judicialization which is very serious”she added.
The rebels, who believe that the situation in Gaza is a “genocide”, have made the defense of the Palestinian cause a major axis of their campaign for the European elections. For the elected representative of Val-de-Marne, the“instrumentalization of justice” aims to silence pro-Palestinian voices. The boss of LFI deputies regretted the “Two weights, two measures” with regard to people who advocate genocide, naming by name the deputy for French people abroad Meyer Habib (related LR).
“Meyer Habib apologizes for the genocide.”

Accustomed to controversial phrases and invectives, the MP, whose constituency includes Israel, is a fervent supporter of the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, whose bombings and military operations in Gaza he supports. “Why are we, the voices for peace, the ones being systematically pursued?” said Mathilde Panot.
