An off-duty police officer was shot and injured Monday evening around 11 p.m., while he was trying to arrest burglars who were coming out of his neighbors’ house, in the town of Maurepas (Yvelines), franceinfo learned on Tuesday June 18 from the public prosecutor’s office of Versailles, confirming information from Parisian.
According to a source close to the investigation, he is a police officer from Raid, the specialized intervention unit of the national police. The prosecution explains that the police officer was awakened by noise coming from his neighbors. He then attempted to pursue two individuals, whom he suspected of being burglars. A fight ensued, and as the suspects fled, the police officer was shot and injured.
According to a source close to the investigation, the police officer appears to have been the victim of a shot from his service weapon, which the burglars seized during the altercation, a hypothesis that the investigation must verify, specifies the prosecution. The police officer was injured in the shoulder and is not life-threatening. According to a source close to the investigation, he is 53 years old, and the two suspects are on the run.
The prosecution confirms to franceinfo the opening of an investigation into attempted intentional homicide against a person holding public authority; it has been entrusted to DCOS 78, the specialized organized crime division, formerly the judicial police.
