A police officer, implicated in the investigation of Jean-François Martin, a student stunned by an LBD shot in Rennes in 2016, is referred to the criminal court, the public prosecutor’s office announced on Friday, November 26. The investigation chamber of the Rennes court of appeal ordered the dismissal of one of the two police officers involved in this investigation. The policeman will appear “for the offense of unintentional injuries resulting in an ITT of more than three months”, specified the general prosecutor’s office.
The investigating chamber thus partially reversed the dismissal order issued in May 2020. This dismissal was motivated by the fact that the author of the shooting could not be “identified with certainty”. The 20-year-old geography student was injured during a demonstration on April 28, 2016 by LBD 40 (defense bullet launcher) and lost the use of his left eye, which had had to be enucleated. He had appealed against the dismissal order.
Two police officers had used their weapons at the time of the facts and had been placed under the status of assisted witness for “willful violence resulting in disability or permanent mutilation by a person holding public authority”. In January 2020, the Defender of Rights had called for disciplinary proceedings against the two police officers “for disproportionate use of force”.
