In a six-minute short film, Bianca, a ballet dancer, brings to life a fable about body acceptance and self-esteem. ” [Elle] fights against its own reflection, overcoming doubt and fear by channeling its inner strength, grace and power,” Disney wrote in a statement.

Until recently, the overweight characters created by Disney were reserved for roles of foil or antagonists. Although Bianca’s journey is bright, some Internet users would have preferred that the quest for the plump dancer had no connection with self-image.

Reflectscripted by Hillary Bradfield (Encanto, Frozen II) and offered since September 14 on the Disney+ platform, is part of the Short Circuit experimental short film program.

In recent years, The Walt Disney Company has repeatedly expressed its growing concern for diversity — whether cultural, sexual or bodily — in its productions and theme parks.
