A plume of smoke hangs over northern Quebec

A plume of smoke from wildfires raging in western Canada is hanging over northern Quebec and affecting air quality, Environment Canada says.

“Air quality has been affected in the far north of Quebec since the beginning of the week,” reports Environment Canada meteorologist Michèle Fleury.

This plume of smoke, caused by forest fires in the Northwest Territories and the northern Prairies, was first concentrated over Nunavik, then on the North Shore. Now, the smoke “is spreading a little to other regions of Quebec,” she adds.

“For the other regions, we are not talking about deteriorated air quality. We can see that the sky is overcast, but the air quality remains within good to acceptable values for all regions.”

The sky may therefore be “a little less blue” until Friday. But the plume “will be chased away […] completely” by the heavy rains expected at the end of the week.
