A plane carrying 62 people on board on a domestic flight in Brazil crashed Friday, August 9, in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, firefighters and the airline Voepass announced. The plane, which was flying from Cascavel, in the southern state of Parana, to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo, crashed in the city of Vinhedo. Images broadcast by local media showed the plane falling at high speed, and others showed a long column of smoke rising above what looked like a residential area.

No official figures have yet been released on the accident involving the ATR 72, which was carrying 58 passengers and four crew members. “Aircraft crash, seven teams involved, only information available at the moment”the Sao Paulo firefighters said on the social network X.

In a statement, Voepass reported “the occurrence of an accident of flight 2283” Friday in the Vinhedo region. “A plane has just crashed in the city of Vinhedo, in the state of Sao Paulo, with 58 passengers and four crew members and it seems that all are dead”Lula said at an official event in Itajai, southern Brazil. He observed a minute of silence for the victims.
