A petition signed by 3,000 people against the extension of the Château-Gontier quarry

Thursday July 21, 2022, at the end of the afternoon, it was the end of the public consultation of the prefecture for the project ofexpansion of the sand quarry of Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne. Lafarge Granulats has been operating this site located on the Route de Craon for more than 20 years. She already owns 43 hectares but wishes to exploit 50 more.

The town hall of Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne and the Community of Communes have already issued an unfavorable opinion on this expansion. It is the prefect who will therefore have to decide in this case.. The citizens themselves have organized themselves and a petition signed by 3,000 people was filed on Thursday afternoon against the project.

The widening of the quarry concerns the communes of Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne, Marigné-Peuton and Prée d’Anjou. A new area where there are 33 hectares of agricultural land and 17 hectares of forest that will have to be cleared to extract the sand. “It is an ecological attack for the territory of Mayenne, in a context of climate crisis”explains Fanny, the bearer of the petition to the rapporteur of the public consultation.

The Lafarge Granulats company that we contacted did not wish to respond to our interview request but explains that it is awaiting the response from the Mayenne prefecture. With this enlargement, it promises to respect the environment as well as the hiring of at least 3 full-time employees. The final report of the consultation must be submitted to the Prefect of Mayenne at the end of august.
