Mothers of families are mobilizing. These residents of Corbeil-Essonnes (Essonne) have launched a petition asking for the return of the local commissioner. The man was sidelined by his superiors. The official was highly regarded by the locals. “He was with us and we are with him”, testifies a petitioner. At the beginning of December, a police officer gauzes a mother at close range during the arrest of her son. The video goes around social networks and causes riots. A few days later, the commissioner apologized to the residents.

“It was in this desire to help young people too, to find dialogue between the police and the inhabitants”, says Fatima Sy. The latter is the spokesperson for the pink vests movement, which brings together mothers trying to ease tensions in the neighborhood. After his statements, the commissioner was dismissed: the public apology would not have been appreciated by his superiors or his men on the ground. The mayor of the city, Bruno Piriou, said he did not understand this sanction. He announced that he was going to approach the prefecture and the Ministry of the Interior.
