A person suffering from measles landed in Montreal from Turkey

Public Health is appealing to passengers on Turkish Airlines flight TK35 which landed at Pierre-Elliot-Trudeau airport in Montreal on April 3 at 6 p.m. She reports that a person suffering from measles was on board the plane, coming from Istanbul, Turkey.

“The people on this flight and those who were at the airport in the arrivals and baggage section between 6 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. may have been exposed to measles,” Public Health indicates in a press release. They are therefore considered contacts of measles cases. »

Remember that measles is extremely contagious. The virus is caught by breathing the same air as an infected person, even at a distance of more than 2 meters (6 feet). It can survive for a few hours suspended in the air and disperse.

This disease manifests itself by fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis, as well as pimples or redness on the skin. It can lead to ear infections, pneumonia, loss of vision or hearing, brain infection and even death.

There is no treatment for measles. Young children, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems are especially prone to developing serious symptoms. The best way to protect yourself against the disease is to get vaccinated, health authorities say.

As of Thursday, Quebec had recorded 43 confirmed cases of measles since the start of the year, including 17 in Montreal, 9 in Montérégie and 5 in Laval. The regions of Laurentides, Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec, Lanaudière and Estrie recorded less than 5.
