The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) reports that it was called to the scene of the accident shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday. The case happened on the 9and Avenue, which is a narrow residential street, not far from the intersection with Beaubien Street. Beaubien Park is also very close to where the collision occurred.

According to the first information gathered by the investigators on the spot, the tragedy occurred when a “cube-style truck” came out of an alley not far from the intersection between the two arteries. Its driver would have initially made a turn towards the south, on the 9and Ave.

In his maneuver, he would have hit the man in his sixties, who was traveling in the opposite direction, towards the north. The pedestrian then fell to the ground, before being violently crushed by the wheels of the truck, which passed over his body.

The state of health of the victim, who was rushed to a hospital after the incident, was initially deemed “critical” by the police. His death was however confirmed by police sources in the early evening.

For his part, the driver of the truck was not injured, but would have been treated on the spot after suffering a nervous shock. He will be met by investigators soon.

The 9and Avenue was also closed to traffic for a good part of the day on Thursday, between the Beaubien Est and Saint-Zotique axes, in order to let the investigators work. No other information was available in connection with this file, Thursday evening.
