A pedestrian fatally struck in Laval

A 76-year-old man was fatally struck late Thursday afternoon by a motorist driving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) in a parking lot on Samson Boulevard in Laval.

A 68-year-old motorist was trying to park his vehicle around 5 p.m. in the parking lot of a small shopping center when he hit a pedestrian. The victim was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Laval Police Service (SPL) has opened an investigation. “But at first glance, there are no criminal elements. It seems an unfortunate accident,” said Erika Landry, spokesperson for the SPL.

This is the first death of a pedestrian to occur on Laval territory in 2023. Last December, four pedestrians lost their lives in Laval.

Before the holiday season, in the wake of a series of deaths of pedestrians in Quebec, the organization Piétons Québec had denounced the “inaction” of the government in the face of the safety of people who travel on foot.

He had also requested a meeting with Prime Minister François Legault and the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Geneviève Guilbault, to discuss solutions aimed at protecting the most vulnerable road users.
