A patient died on Tuesday January 2 on a stretcher at the Nantes University Hospital (Loire-Atlantique) during her treatment in the hospital emergency room, currently saturated, reports France Bleu Loire Océan, Wednesday January 10.

The information, first communicated by the Force Ouvrière (FO) union at the hospital, was confirmed on Wednesday by the management of the Nantes University Hospital. In a press release, the establishment mentions the death of this patient “during her treatment while she was on a stretcher in a queue”. The University Hospital, however, does not specify the age of this patient, nor the circumstances which led her to go to the emergency room.

The union speaks of “saturation” of emergencies

The hospital management also mentions “a peak in attendance” in emergencies caused by epidemics of flu, Covid and other winter illnesses. The Force Ouvrière union, for its part, speaks of “saturation” of the service with an average of 230 patients per day for two weeks, or even up to 280 people on certain days. According to FO, the shortage of beds in other departments of the University Hospital partly explains this congestion.

The management of the CHU specifies that in this epidemic context, the workforce is reinforced “as much as possible”.
