More than 10,600 hectares burned in Gironde on Sunday July 17. In Landiras and La Teste-de-Buch, firefighters are still on the ground. A team from France Télévisions spent the night with them.
Firefighters faced, on the night of Saturday July 16 to Sunday July 17, fires which are intensifying in places. The fight is incessant around Landiras (Gironde). As soon as they overcome a hearth, a new start must be mastered. And at night, everything is more complicated. “It’s more difficult, because you obviously see less of the ground, you have to be careful of the crevices, the branches, not to trip over them“, explains Chief Warrant Officer Nicolas Lesgourgues, from the Gironde departmental fire and rescue service.
Facing the flames, the fight is won meter after meter. After several hours, it is finally the first victory. “We were hired to contain the fire so that it wouldn’t jump the street, and go to the other side of this track. The action was carried out with a spear, it was effective”, adds Robin Thomas, team leader of the Gironde departmental fire and rescue service. In La Teste-de-Buch (Gironde), the firefighters are also always mobilized. 10,600 hectares have burned since the start of the fires.
