Iceland: a new volcanic eruption, the fourth since December
Iceland: a new volcanic eruption, the fourth since December
(franceinfo)
In Iceland, a small port town in the southwest of the country had to be evacuated once again after a major volcanic eruption. On the ground, the lava progresses very quickly.
Seen from the sky, the lava forms an incandescent web on the Icelandic soil. The sound of magma breaks the silence of the night. Of this living work, the only artist is powerful, unstoppable nature. Lava is spreading as the hours pass this evening of Saturday, March 16, in southwest Iceland. A new volcanic fault has opened and is releasing lava several kilometers long. Thousands of cubic meters of magma pour out.
No immediate danger to the population
The population is not in immediate danger, as has been the case in recent months. The 4,000 inhabitants of the town of Grindavík were evacuated. The region is facing its fourth volcanic eruption since December 2023. The Icelandic government has already announced that it wants to buy back residences in this area, where nature seems to have reclaimed its rights.
