This is the third in a short time. A new volcanic eruption began on the morning of Thursday, February 8, on the Reykjanes peninsula, in the southwest of Iceland. Lava jets skyward are visible from the capital Reykjavik. Television images show flows accompanied by a cloud of smoke rising from a crack in the Icelandic night.

This eruption is taking place again north of Grindavik, a small town of 4,000 inhabitants which was evacuated as a precaution on November 11. “According to initial reports from the Coast Guard surveillance flight, the eruption took place in the same area as that of December 18. The fissure is approximately three kilometers long”specifies the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO).

“The lava jets reach a height of around 50-80 m and the plume rises to a height of around 3 km”, continues the office. The lava flow seems “slightly less” that at the start of the eruption on December 18, adds the IMO, which predicted an imminent eruption in its last report.
