The Japanese beetle has already been spotted in Italy. This insect is particularly destructive: it attacks forests, crops and fruit trees.
It is a magnificent beetle, but it is also voracious. Unlike the European beetle, which is rather brown, the Japanese beetle has green highlights. On the food side, he eats everything, and that’s the problem. In Italy, the Japanese beetle has wreaked havoc on vine leaves. This insect can attack nearly 400 different types of plants, such as “food plants, such as corn, soybeans, vines” or “beans and asparagus”according to Christine Tayeh, scientific coordinator at ANSES.
The Japanese beetle can also target forest species, such as poplar. This invasive species does not yet have a predator in Europe. Arriving in Italy in 2014, it has proliferated there ever since. More recently spotted in Switzerland and Germany, the Japanese beetle is approaching France. So, to spot them as soon as possible at our borders, agents from the Ministry of Agriculture set traps near the highway. The insect could indeed travel in trucks.
