In Germany, in Munich, a new kind of supermarket is full: to be a customer, you have to be a shareholder, and therefore co-owner of the store, as well as participate in the various tasks in the chain.

It is a new type of supermarket that has developed in Germany, in Munich. He looks like any other, yet he is vastly different. To be able to be a customer, you have to become a co-owner of the store, the entry ticket is 180 euros, but also participate in the management of orders, the organization of the shelves and work on a voluntary basis. “In general, in life, we always tend to give our opinion on what we would do best. There, we can really do it, it concerns all the departments of the store”, rejoices Gabriele Nixdorf, co-owner of the supermarket.

The supermarket opened four months ago, but is already enjoying great success. At the cash desk, the first few hours are difficult, but customers are understanding and patient: they have to do the same. “It’s great, it’s nice to work with people. They accepted the store, like their market, it’s great”, explains Kristin Mannsmann, founder of Food Hub. The organic and local producers are favored, the short circuit is privileged. A co-owner will directly collect the meat. The prices are moderate, there are no middlemen, and the producers’ incomes higher. The store has 1,000 co-owners and aims to double it to be profitable.
