a new provisional report shows 2,681 dead and more than 2,500 injured

Three days after the earthquake which struck Morocco, the provisional toll shows 2,681 deaths, according to the latest report communicated, Monday, September 11, by the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior. The earthquake also left 2,476 people injured. At least four French people died, according to the Quai d’Orsay. Follow our live.

A friendly football match between Morocco and Brazil canceled. “The friendly match of the Moroccan and Brazilian Olympic teams initially scheduled for Monday September 11, 2023 at 8 p.m.” was canceled, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced in a press release on Sunday. “This decision follows the three-day state of national mourning declared due to the violent earthquake”the statement said.

Over 500 schools damaged. Morocco’s Ministry of National Education announced Monday (September 11th) that 530 schools and 55 boarding schools were damaged in the major earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday evening. Seven teachers died and 39 others were injured, the minister also announced, in a press release published on Instagram. Classes were suspended in 42 localities in the provinces of Chichaoua, Taroudant and Al Haouz.

French aid of “5 million euros” for NGOs. The Minister of Foreign Affairs announced Monday morning that France would provide aid of “5 million euros” for NGOs on site in Morocco. “We remain at Morocco’s disposal. Morocco has not refused [l’aide de] person, he simply calls for help according to his needs”, also declared Catherine Colonna, affirming that the country, which has not yet requested aid from France, was “free to choose”.

Morocco accepts aid from four countries. The kingdom accepted aid from Spain, Britain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Spanish, British, Qatari and Emirati rescue teams “entered this day [dimanche] in touch” with their counterparts in Morocco with a view to coordinating their efforts, announced the Moroccan Interior Ministry.
