Solar panels made in Europe represented 3% of global production in 2022, when we import 80% of our installations from China. A new factory should create 1,700 jobs by 2025 in Hambach in Moselle.

Hambach’s wasteland in Moselle could soon become a giant factory, supposed to embody the rise of French photovoltaics. More than 700 million euros of investment and 1,700 jobs, by 2025 good news for the municipality and the whole region is delighted with the arrival of this new employer. “It’s still employment, we are still in a basin where there are more than 7% of unemployed”launches the mayor of the municipality of Hambach (Moselle).

Try to source from Europe in the future

But the factory still has to come out of the ground, unlike the previous project presented by foreign capital. This time, there is an urgent need to produce photovoltaic panels, a sector where Europe imports more than 80% of its installations from China and where France acts as a small thumb with only a handful of manufacturers already in production. In a company in Alsace, Voltec Solar, the 120 employees assemble panels from components manufactured abroad. The company tries as much as possible to get its supplies from Europe, which is not easy as production is rare. They too welcome this new plant with the greatest impatience.
