An 18-year-old Sudanese national was arrested in the United Kingdom on Wednesday evening in the investigation into the death of five migrants, including a little girl, who were trying to cross the Channel on Tuesday, police announced Thursday April 25. Arrested in Manston, in the south-east of England, for aiding illegal immigration and illegal entry into British territory, the suspect was placed in police custody, specifies the British crime fighting agency ( NCA).
Two other 22-year-old men, a Sudanese and a South Sudanese arrested on Wednesday remain in police custody. A 19-year-old Sudanese man was released without prosecution in this investigation. Highlighting cooperation between the British and French authorities, the NCA announced that the hearing of “those who were on the boat in question and subsequently arrived in the UK is ongoing and is likely to take several days”.
In addition to a little girl, three men and a woman are among the victims. Some 112 people, including Syrians and Iraqis, were on board the boat. The boat set sail around 5 a.m., but the engine stopped a few hundred meters from the shore and people fell into the water. Around fifty migrants were rescued, then disembarked in Boulogne-sur-Mer. The others returned to the United Kingdom.
