Scientists from the schooner Tara left the port of Lorient on Sunday April 2 for a two-year mission along the European coast. Its objective is to study the impact of human pollution on the world of the ocean.

After four months of preparation and work, Tara cast off for a new expedition, called Tara Europa. For this scientific mission, the schooner will travel all over Europe to Tallinn (Slovenia). “We’re going up towards the Baltic. It’s a very trafficked area, the Channel. (…) Sailing in an ultra-coastal area with a lot of boats around, it’s a little different from what we did before , off the coast”explains Martin Hertau, captain of the schooner Tara.

Results expected in two or three years

The objective of the expedition is to study the interface between the terrestrial environment and the marine environment in key areas, such as agricultural regions or industrial sites. Scientists will be particularly interested in the effects of human actions on ecosystems, in particular the impact of chemical pollution on marine biodiversity. The data collected will be analyzed by more than 500 researchers. The first results should be known within two or three years.
