The announcement of the construction of a new Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital can only be good news. In 24 hours, I was asked at least ten times if I thought I would have the opportunity to work there one day, since I don’t plan to retire for another 20 years. It is true that after the first announcement in 2012, 11 years have passed and we are still at the point… A! It’s difficult to give in to enthusiasm without cynicism.
However, this is rare good news for the public network, which contrasts with the generally widespread feeling of abandonment that afflicts us. More than ever, we feel suffocated and unable to accomplish our work within a reasonable time frame. Each new patient represents so many challenges: how to complete our investigations, how to operate as quickly as the situation requires? It has simply become impossible, and the burden of responsibility is untenable.
The system is on its last legs and no one is taking care of its stakeholders. Bill 15, announced as a revolution, does not inspire any enthusiasm on the ground. The temple is in ruins. Shaking the columns promises to be difficult, there is already so much dust everywhere.
For those who have their hands dirty, discussions in high places give the impression of disconnection from all our daily struggles. It feels like you’re sitting in the driver’s seat, but not holding the steering wheel. Even worse ? Those who hold it do not see the road and all its potholes, curves, cliffs…
So, yes, a new hospital, and quickly. Let’s invest in the network and make it attractive to the staff who have deserted it and continue to do so for the benefit of the private sector. But it won’t just take bricks. We must start now to take care of the people who work there.
