(Washington) The US Department of Justice launched on Monday a database centralizing reports and disciplinary procedures against all federal police officers, an initiative aimed at regaining the trust of the population.
The creation of this internal database results from a decree signed in May 2022 by President Joe Biden, symbolically on 2e anniversary of the murder of George Floyd by a local police officer, in order to better regulate federal law enforcement, but which does not govern the police of each state or community.
“Protecting public safety relies on trust between police departments and the communities they work for,” Mr. Biden said in a statement, urging Congress to “pass the George Floyd Justice in Defense Act.” of order” so that the rules of the decree extend to all levels.
The database, which will be accessible only by the heads of the services concerned, and ultimately to other sectors of the executive, must be completed within two months, i.e. by February 16, 2024.
The file of each agent will contain any element of each of the six categories of failure to fulfill their obligations defined by the decree, specified the Department of Justice.
These include criminal convictions, civil judgments, dismissals, suspensions, resignations or retirements under investigation, and repeated complaints or disciplinary actions for “serious misconduct”, according to the same source.
