Montreal has taken another step towards the possible construction of a new bridge linking Île des Soeurs to Verdun, a project that has been stagnating for years.

The city announced this week that it began “a pre-feasibility study” this fall.
The new bridge is planned along the axis of rue Galt, in Verdun, and boulevard Marguerite-Bourgeoys, on Île des Soeurs.
Two possibilities are analysed. “The first scenario analyzed will be a footbridge dedicated exclusively to pedestrians and cyclists; the second will be a footbridge also designed for active transportation, but with a bearing capacity and a width allowing the passage of certain emergency vehicles,” indicated the City of Montreal. “A preliminary cost estimate is also planned. »
The report, commissioned from private firms, is expected this spring.
“Creating a new link connecting the two shores of Verdun has been one of the borough’s priorities for many years,” said borough mayor Marie-Andrée Mauger in a press release. “This link is becoming increasingly necessary so that all Verdun residents have better access to the borough’s major facilities and attractions. »
Projects to connect Île des Soeurs to Verdun by a new bridge have been emerging regularly for several decades.
In 2008, the borough believed it had officially put the project on track. Mayor Claude Trudel then evoked a bridge at 15 or 20 million reserved for emergency vehicles, buses, bicycles and pedestrians.
