A national tribute will be paid to the painter Pierre Soulages on Wednesday, learned France Télévisions Saturday October 29 at the Elysée, confirming information from France Inter. “Pierre Soulages knew how to reinvent black, by making light spring from it. Beyond black, his works are vivid metaphors from which each of us draws hope”, reacted Emmanuel Macron on Twitter after his death, on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday at the age of 102. The Head of State will preside over this ceremony which will be held in the Cour Carrée du Louvre at 3 p.m.

Tributes also poured in from his home region. “It’s a huge sadness because I lose a friend (…) until the end he painted, until a few weeks ago, he worked at his home in Sète”, said Benoît Decron, director of the Soulages museum in Rodez (Aveyron). One of his paintings from 1961 sold for $20.2 million in New York in November 2021. The painting titled Painting 162 x 130 cm, May 2, 1963 sold on Wednesday for almost 6 million euros, Sotheby’s announced in the evening.
