Emmanuel Macron will chair a national tribute ceremony in honor of Jacques Delors on Friday January 5, according to franceinfo information obtained from the Élysée. This ceremony will take place at Les Invalides, in Paris, from 11 a.m.
The former president of the European Commission, father of the euro and figure of the French left died Wednesday December 27 at the age of 98. He died “at his Parisian home in his sleep“, specified his daughter, Martine Aubry, who announced his death. Since then, the tributes have followed one another. Emmanuel Macron thus greeted on X a “inexhaustible craftsman of our Europe” and one “statesman of French destiny“.
Former Minister of the Economy under François Mitterrand (1981-1984), he dampened the hopes of the left by refusing to run in the 1995 presidential election even though he was the big favorite in the polls.
In Brussels, where he remained at the head of the Commission from 1985 to 1995, Jacques Delors played the role of architect in shaping the contours of contemporary Europe: establishment of the single market, signing of the Schengen agreements, Single European Act, launch of the Erasmus student exchange program, reform of the common agricultural policy, start of the Economic and Monetary Union which will lead to the creation of the euro…
