Marseille: a musician teaches the mandolin to children in the northern districts – (France 2)
In Marseille, in Bouches-du-Rhône, a passionate musician teaches the mandolin to children in the northern districts. In three years, 250 little people from Marseillais have been able to benefit from Vincent Beer-Demander’s lessons.
Vincent Beer-Ask is one of the greatest mandolinists in the world. Adopted from Marseille, this music teacher doesn’t just play in the Old Port. In the northern districts of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), one of the poorest suburbs in France, he has been making the mandolin resonate in schools for three years.
For many children, love at first sight with the instrument
The mandolin is a kind of small lute with a short neck. Once a week, 12 primary school students learn to play, under the watchful eye of Vincent Beer-Ask and his companion. The mandolinist lent them the instruments, and for many, it was quickly love at first sight. In three years, Vincent Beer-Ask and his mandolin won the hearts of 250 little Marseillais from the northern districts. On the set of 13 Heures, Thursday February 1, journalist Valérie Heurtel presents other initiatives of this type. Thus, for several years, the Philharmonie de Paris has been offering free music lessons to young people who live in the countryside, far from conservatories.
