a mixed record according to the Regional Chamber of Accounts

The report is timely, as this Friday is World Recycling Day. The Regional Chamber of Accounts has drawn up the balance sheet of the city of Paris in terms of waste management. While it notes a significant drop in total household waste since 2010, it underlines the fact that the objective of a 10% reduction by 2020 has not been achieved.

464 kilos of waste per inhabitant were collected in 2019 compared to 491 kilos in 2010. The overall volume of residual household waste, that which is thrown into the green bin, amounted to 752,104 tonnes in 2019 compared to 840,625 tonnes in 2010 . The sorting rate is 40%a higher figure than in the other surrounding towns also affiliated with Syctom, a joint union in Ile-de-France which deals with waste treatment.

A black spot: organic waste

Among the black spots identified in this report, the collection of organic waste figures prominently. Organized in only three boroughs, only for individuals and municipal services but not for restaurants, it only allowed to collect 3,000 tonsa total “low and far” from the objective provided for by law with the generalization of the sorting of this waste by the end of 2023. Despite efforts to punish the perpetrators, bulky waste deposits also increased over the period observed .
