A minibus accident left at least 20 dead and eight injured in northern Egypt, the Ministry of Health announced on Saturday (November 12th). The minibus overturned on a road in the Nile Delta, the package said, blaming the driver “who phoned while driving”.

The driver who was injured “was startled by an oncoming car. He was going too fast to dodge it”, added the press release from the prosecution. He was arrested and initial analyzes revealed that he was under the influence of narcotics, according to the same source. The minibus which was pulled out of the water was badly damaged, noted an AFP photographer.

Traffic accidents are frequent in Egypt, a country where the roads are often poorly maintained and the Highway Code is not respected. Officially, 7,000 people were killed in traffic accidents last year in the most populous country in the Arab world, which has 104 million inhabitants.

In July, 25 people died and 35 others were injured when their bus crashed into a truck parked on the side of the road in central Egypt. “The driver of the truck had stopped on the side of the road to change a tire when he was hit from behind by the bus”, with about fifty passengers on board, explained the governorate of Minya, where the accident took place, 300 kilometers south of Cairo.
