This Sunday I had the chance to witness a miracle of nature: the birth of a human being. Everything took place in peaceful circumstances, thanks to the presence of a competent, funny, reassuring and discreet midwife at the Rivière birth center in Nicolet. Being grateful to him, I was happy to see that there is a line in the form to complete the birth certificate concerning the person who accompanied the birth. Now, this line is called midwife. No, but what nonsense!
When my daughter wants me to tell her about her birth, which I hope with all my heart, I will tell her that it was in the presence of a midwife that she was born: Maude Provencher St-Pierre, a midwife, as her grandmother was and as generations of courageous and determined women have been. It’s a shame that the Quebec government’s form is so little grateful to them. They deserve better.
