The very first Parisian urban forest was inaugurated in Paris on Wednesday June 12. Nearly 500 trees were planted to create islands of coolness and lower the temperature in the city.
A micro-forest in the heart of Paris. A year and a half ago, however, Place de Catalunya was covered in concrete. Local residents are happy to discover this green oasis just a stone’s throw from the Eiffel Tower. “It’s magnificent. It’s very pleasant, more greenery and calm”, rejoice passers-by. Almost 500 trees and 16,000 plants were planted, with a subsoil of 1.50 m, enough to reconstitute a mini forest, with a stated objective: to create an island of freshness. Cost of these plantations: more than 9 million euros. Miniforests are growing almost everywhere in France now.
But is it really effective? In one of the plots, the temperature has dropped, but in terms of biodiversity, it is less convincing. “We don’t have anything really spectacular, which surprises the students”, explains Chritophe Andolo, researcher at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse. Designers are betting on time. It will take around fifteen years for the trees to grow and take root.
