An exceptional storm hitting eastern Ukraine and southern Russia has left four people dead. Two million homes are without electricity and temperatures are negative.

A huge wave breaks over the seaside resort, located south of Sochi in Russia. “Everything is flooded. It goes up to the first floor,” testifies a man. In just a few seconds, an entire neighborhood is invaded by water. Raging seas and gusts of up to 150 km/h. A railway line, located on the coast, did not resist. Part of the tracks have collapsed while trains are still running.

The “storm of the century”

Same scenes of panic during the night in Crimea. The Black Sea has overflowed and several neighborhoods are underwater. Hundreds of people were urgently evacuated by firefighters using boats and 400,000 homes are still without electricity in this region, annexed by Russia in 2014. Storm Bettina, already nicknamed the “storm of the century” by Russian media, first affected the Balkans this weekend, before moving back north, towards Russia, but also Ukraine.
