The heads of American and Russian diplomacy met in Geneva (Switzerland) on Friday January 21, but hopes of seeing tensions ease around the Ukrainian crisis have been dashed.
On images from the Russian Ministry of Defense we see Russian missiles leaving for the Ukrainian front, Vladimir Putin’s troops in full exercise on land and at sea. Officially the Russian army is training but these major maneuvers are worrying. The confrontation between Russia and the United States in Geneva took on the appearance of a Cold War, the face-to-face lasted two hours. “Russia has never, ever, anywhere threatened the Ukrainian people through these officials,” testifies Sergei Lavrov, head of Russian diplomacy.
Straight answer from the head of American diplomacy, Anthony Blinken: “We don’t expect to settle our differences here, but I hope and expect that we can check whether the path of diplomacy and dialogue remains open.” He took the opportunity to request the withdrawal of the troops massed on the borders of Ukraine. NATO countries are worried about how far Vladimir Putin can go. Russia demands that NATO undertake in writing never to integrate Ukraine, a request deemed unacceptable.
