Athletics will once again be the main theme of the day on Tuesday, August 6, with the presence of French athletes in certain events, such as the javelin and the long jump, and the women’s 200m final in the evening. In the middle of the day, the French handball team, defending champions and favorites, will try to beat Germany in the quarter-finals. In the late afternoon, the French men’s basketball team, in full disarray since the start of the tournament, will face a huge challenge: defeating Canada for a ticket to the semi-finals. Ask for the program. At 10am, the individual show jumping final in equestrian sports is synonymous with a chance of a French medal for Simon Delestre and Julien Epaillard. In track cycling, the French Sébastien Vigier, Florian Grengbo and Rayan Helal are expected for the men’s team speed event, from 6.59pm for the first round, until a possible final at 8.10pm. This day will also be the last dance of Mijain Lopez, Cuban Greco-Roman wrestling legend. He could become the first Olympic athlete to win five titles at five different Olympic Games. Here is the full program for the day.
The handball and basketball players are aiming for a semi-final. The French handball team’s Bleues, the defending champions, will cross paths with the Germans at 1:30 p.m. in the quarter-finals. A taste of revenge for the French basketball players: one year after a bitter defeat at the World Cup, Victor Wembanyama’s team will face Canada, one of the favorites for the title, and will have to play the game of their lives to reach the semi-finals (6 p.m.). The NBA stars of Team USA will face Brazil (9:30 p.m.).
Two new medals for surfing during the night. France stacked up the podiums so much during the first week that Monday seemed gloomy. The French men’s 3×3 basketball team, however, won a superb (and historic) silver medal, beaten in overtime by the Netherlands. Angèle Hug also took silver in the kayak cross final. During the night, Tahitian prodigy Kauli Vaast won gold in surfing at Teahupo’o and the Reunion Islander Johanne Defay takes the bronze. Enough to bring the number of charms to 48 (13 in gold, 16 in silver, 19 in bronze).
French hopes and a grand finale. The athletics events continue at the Stade de France, with in particular the repechage of the 110m hurdles, an event where the Frenchman Wilhem Belocian will try to qualify for the semi-finals (10:50). Teuraiterai Tupaia will try to make the French javelin shine during the qualifications (10:20). The Frenchwoman Hilary Kpatcha is expected in the long jump (11:15). Later in the day, the French hopes will rest on Louise Maraval and Shana Grebo, in the semi-final of the 400m hurdles. Several finals are also scheduled: the women’s hammer throw (19:57), the men’s 1,500m (20:50) and, above all, the women’s 200m (21:40).
