It was the cleaning lady who gave the alert, shortly before eleven o’clock on Monday, August 22. In one of the bars in the Jean Moulin district, in Bergerac, a fire broke out at number 19 in a cellar, and the smoke spread to the three floors of the building. The tenants were evacuated, the firefighters examined eight of them on the spot to check that they were well.
Two people, a 15-year-old girl and the 47-year-old housekeeper, were taken care of by the emergency services but they did not wish to be taken to hospital. The flames melted sheaths of electrical wiresthe firefighters cut off the electricity in the building.
A mattress that catches fire in the basement
According to the first observations of the firefighters, it’s a mattress that caught fire in the first basement. The flames were extinguished within an hour. The municipal police, first responder on the scene, gave way to investigators from the Bergerac police station who came to make observations on the spot. An investigation is open to understand the origin of the fire.
The building is part of the set of housing in the Jean Moulin district renovated a few years ago, both on the facade and in the accommodation. The social center of the district is precisely to be renovated in the coming months.
