Scientists are warning of a massive episode of coral bleaching around the world, due to record ocean temperatures. A rise in temperatures caused by human-caused global warming.
They are withering away. Corals on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef are experiencing the worst bleaching event ever observed. The red, brown and pink colors disappear in favor of white, a sign of mortality visible on nearly three-quarters of the corals. A disaster for Anne Hoggett, director of the Australian Museum’s Lizard Island research station, who documents the state of the reefs year after year. “The only time bleaching was this bad was in 2016, when almost everything died”she says.
The Great Reef is home to more than 600 species of coral
A phenomenon that is all the more worrying as the Great Barrier is home to more than 600 species of coral and 1,600 species of fish. Australia is not the only one affected. Scientists are warning of a massive bleaching episode around the world, due to record ocean temperatures. An increase due to human-caused global warming. If global warming reaches 2°C, all corals on Earth could disappear.
