A man was shot dead by police early Thursday afternoon in the Lachine area of Montreal.
At approximately 1 p.m., a call was made to the 911 emergency service to warn that a man had just attacked people with a sharp object. The assault allegedly occurred in a residential building on rue des Érables.
Upon their arrival on the scene, officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) spotted the man, who then rushed towards them. They therefore opened fire in his direction, said the Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI), to which the case was transferred.
The man was hit with “at least one projectile,” reports the BEI, and was pronounced dead in hospital.
The mission of the BEI is to investigate all cases where a person, other than a police officer on duty, dies, suffers a serious injury or is injured by a firearm used by a police officer during an intervention.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) will act as a support police service by providing two forensic identification technicians who will work under the supervision of investigators from the Bureau.
