A stowaway traveled 9,000 km between Johannesburg (South Africa) and Amsterdam (Netherlands), hidden in the front landing gear of a cargo plane, Dutch authorities announced on Sunday January 23. The unidentified man is said to have slipped on board the plane before it left Johannesburg, said the spokeswoman for the Royal Dutch Military Police. “The man was found alive in the nose gear of the plane and was transported to hospital in a stable condition”, she detailed, adding that“It is quite remarkable that the man is still alive”.

Flights between Johannesburg and Amsterdam take an average of 11 hours. Stowaways on flights to the Netherlands are rare, according to the military police spokeswoman, who recalled that previous attempts had involved people from Nigeria and Kenya. In 2021, border police discovered the body of a Nigerian in the landing gear of a plane arriving at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
