A man, who was digging a tunnel to probably rob a bank in Rome, was buried for eight hours under the rubble on Thursday August 11, Italian police announced. Three other individuals were involved in the operation. “Two men, from Naples, were arrested for resisting a public officer and two others, from Rome, were arrested for the damage caused, one of which is the one who was in the hole and is now in hospital , clarified the press service of the carabinieri. The investigation is still ongoing, we do not exclude that they are thieves, it is one of the hypotheses.
Dozens of firefighters were busy Thursday around this hole to get out the man who remained buried under hundreds of kilos of earth and building materials after the collapse of the tunnel. For the Italian media, the presence of an artisanal tunnel in this area of the Italian capital is explained by a failed burglary attempt. The collapse took place near an empty store and allegedly targeted a nearby bank, reports La Stampa (link in Italian).
