A man of dual Swiss and Spanish nationality was arrested on the night of Tuesday October 24 to Wednesday October 25 in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) after a chase with the gendarmes. He had just fled Switzerland with his two children aged nine and twelve, franceinfo learned from the gendarmes.
It was agents from the Franco-Swiss police and customs cooperation center (CCPD) in Geneva who reported to the French gendarmes the escape of this man with his two children, whom he refused to hand over to their mother in accordance with a civil judgment in Swiss.
A helicopter and two border police crews mobilized
Thanks to this alert, French law enforcement were able to identify, around 2:30 a.m. on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the vehicle of this individual in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The gendarmes of the Mérignac company, supported by a helicopter and two border police crews, then chased him for around twenty kilometers.
The man refused to comply and drove at a very high speed, until he was arrested in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle 20 minutes later. He was taken into custody for “subtraction of minor children by ascendants”, “refusal to obey a summons to stop” And “use of false license plate”. The two children are safe and sound and have been brought to safety by the police.
