A 23-year-old Frenchman was charged with “attempted murder” and imprisoned in Belgium for pushing a woman on the tracks of the metro in Brussels on Friday January 14, announced the Belgian capital’s public prosecutor’s office.

A video of the assault was widely shared on social media, sparking outrage across the country. On these CCTV images, which we have chosen not to relay, we see a young man wearing a black T-shirt and bag strolling on the subway platform before violently pushing a woman on the rails. The assault occurs just seconds before the arrival of a train, which manages to stop in extremis. The victim, slightly injured, and the metro driver, shocked, were both briefly hospitalized on Friday evening.

The author, arrested the same evening in another metro station, was presented on Saturday to an investigating judge who charged him with “attempted murder”, then placed in detention, according to the prosecution. Identified by Belgian media as a 23-year-old Frenchman from the Nancy region (Meurthe-et-Moselle), the suspect must undergo a psychiatric examination in the coming days, said the prosecution.
