A 24-year-old man is in police custody on Tuesday August 16 in the morning after a ram-car break in a Valentino store in the eighth arrondissement of Paris, franceinfo learned from concordant sources.
The man is suspected of having run several times against the doors of the luxury store around 2 a.m. on the night of Monday to Tuesday, a police source told franceinfo. He managed to grab several items before fleeing in his car.
The police spotted him not far from there, near the Place de l’Opéra. The suspect continued to advance and abandoned his vehicle on the Place de la Concorde. He then voluntarily jumped into the Seine, according to the same source. But he was quickly picked up by the river brigade, arrested and taken into custody. He is slightly injured.
The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation for “aggravated theft” and “refusal to comply”, he told franceinfo. The 1st DPJ is seized. Investigators believe for the moment that the loot has been found in full, according to a source familiar with the matter, but the shop has yet to list what was stolen from it. The damage caused by the theft is still being assessed.
