A man arrested for an arson in an SAQ in the company of a child in Quebec

A 39-year-old man accompanied by a child allegedly tried to start a fire in a branch of the SAQ in Quebec City on Friday.

The emergency services were informed around 10:38 a.m. that their presence was required at the SAQ store on Cartier Avenue in the Montcalm sector.

When the firefighters arrived, the “start of fire” which had been lit against a wall of the entrance portico had already been extinguished, according to the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ).

Damage appears to be limited, based on available information. No one was hurt.

Officers were able to arrest a 39-year-old suspect for arson. He was taken to Victoria Police Station for questioning.

“There was a child who was with the man during the events. The child was picked up by the police. We are currently in the process of handing over the child to a person of trust,” said David Pelletier, spokesperson for the SPVQ, at the end of the morning.

The latter could not decide on the motivations of the man or the means used to cause the fire.

The DPJ will probably be called upon to ensure a follow-up, added Mr. Pelletier.
