Around 10:30 a.m., a fire broke out in materials at the Kocas Recycling center at 10,920 Sherbrooke Street East.

“We are on general alert. This is the highest alert level. About 150 firefighters are on site,” said the head of the prevention section of the Montreal Fire Department, Matthew Griffith.

At present, the blaze is not under control, it is still spreading inside the building. “We’re in defensive mode, we’re outside and we’re spraying to try to knock down the flames and put out the fire,” Griffith said.

The building is isolated, so there is no risk of spreading to other buildings.

A large perimeter is in place. Sherbrooke Street is closed between Broadway and Joseph-Versailles.

A power interruption occurs in the mains. Nearly 2,000 customers are without electricity, according to the Hydro-Quebec website.
