A warehouse on fire emitting thick black smoke. Saturday February 17, a stock of 900 tonnes of lithium batteries caught firein Viviez (Aveyron). The fire is under control but not extinguished. Residents were confined for several hours. “It was a filthy cloud, I’ve never seen that. We could hear the batteries exploding”testifies a local resident.
Seventy firefighters mobilized
Seventy Firefighters were called in to bring the fire under control. “We are dealing with metal fires which require very large quantities of water”, underlines Colonel Mickael Lecoq, SDIS director of Aveyron. Units specializing in chemical risks carried out air analyses. These proved reassuring, according to the authorities. New analyzes of water and soil are awaited by environmental protection associations.
