A listed church in the Dordogne affected by a fire

The firefighters intervened with the large ladder to save this listed church. This Wednesday at the start of the afternoon, a fire broke out in the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, in Saint-Jean-de-Côle, in the Périgord Vert. The building has been listed as a historical monument since 1862. A candle fell over, which caused the fire to start. This Wednesday at the end of the afternoon, the fire is extinguished but the firefighters are still on site to disperse the smoke.

The church walls blackened, the wooden balustrade scorched

The church is vast but the fumes have caused damage: the walls and furniture are blackened, the wooden balustrade is burned. Firefighters use large fans to ventilate the building. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church is particularly known for its paintings: it includes an altarpiece, a high altar and a tabernacle from the 17th century. These paintings are attributed to the school of Nicolas Poussin or that of Eustache Le Sueur. The interior of the church was restored less than ten years ago.
