For its 175th anniversary, the Quebec Bar is launching a major “marathon”, during which lawyers will meet Quebecers to enlighten them about their rights during all kinds of free legal activities.
Activities will take place from March 21 to 23 across the province.
The Bar indicates that this is a concrete action which implements its desire to “get closer to the public, to further humanize the profession it supervises” and also in order to promote access to justice.
Some workshops are intended for young people on subjects that affect them and others for seniors — some are offered directly in seniors’ residences.
Other information activities are intended for the general public, for example on alternative methods of conflict resolution, on caregivers, on youth protection, wills, alimony and rental rights. Webinars have also been created for those who cannot travel.
“Lawyers want to engage in dialogue with citizens. They want to be present on the ground, and listen to the needs in terms of justice. By organizing this event, the Bar positions itself as a catalyst for this cultural change within the profession,” underlines the President of Quebec, Me Catherine Claveau.
The schedule for the Legal Marathon in each region of Quebec can be found online.
The Barreau du Québec, which is the professional order governing the practice of some 30,000 lawyers in the province, offers other activities and free information services throughout the year, including its legal clinic. This is also the case with the Young Bar of Montreal, which notably offers a hearing preparation service and a free telephone legal clinic.
