Reunion Island is particularly famous throughout the world for the Piton de la Fournaise. One of the most active volcanoes in the world, which has a habit of disrupting the landscape and the coastline.
A jagged coastline, which appears solid and stable, but during the eruptions of Piton de la Fournaise, a whole new landscape can appear a few months later. The lava which mixes with the aqueous elements and the sand gives birth to a dark colored sand and to new reliefs on the island of Reunion, located in the Indian Ocean. For Honoré Dumont, living in the small town of Tremblet, “the volcano is dangerous, but pretty at the same time”.
In April 2007, a lava flow had devastated part of the landscape, while recreating the coastline. Hervé Dumont almost lost everything at this time, the lava flow passing a few tens of meters from his home. The Piton de la Fournaise has left traces and could create a new beach, replacing the existing one, according to the explanations of Aline Peltier, director of the volcanological observatory of Piton de la Fournaise. An opportunity to give back a chance to underwater species.
