“A land without bees?”: to the rescue of our foragers

“Whether we are big, medium, small, if there are no bees, we will die”, explains Colombian coffee producer and beekeeper Rosa Restrepo in the documentary A land without bees?. Environmentalists and farmers have been crying out for years now: they need to be protected. These pollinators are at the origin of the majority of our cultures and without them, a colossal work on the part of humans as well as a complete review of our diet is to be expected.

In all four corners of the world, bees are dying out en masse. For good reason: neonicotinoids. These are insecticides that target parasitic insects by attacking their central nervous system. This 45-minute documentary sheds light on what will happen to our yellow and black friends if these products remain on the market.

Three years. This is the number of years humanity would have guaranteed food on Earth after the disappearance of bees. Their extinction could occur as soon as within 15 years, given the number of losses suffered in colonies, ranging from 30% to 80% of hives in various regions of the world. Orchards in Sichuan, China are already living without bees, while California imports hundreds of millions of bees each year to maintain its almond production.

This documentary offers a concise look, albeit a terrifying perspective on the future of our planet and humanity in a world without bees. Frightening statistics and disarming testimonies that create a relevant, but above all essential documentary.
